An Interview with Donnie McKee

Follow your dreams, they tell you throughout your years of schooling. And he did just that. For as long as he can remember, he has wanted to start his own business. Please read the interview below to learn about his journey, his passions, and how he runs his business!

Q: Why did you decide to start your own business?

I have always wanted to run my own business. Even as a little boy, I had business on my mind!

Q: How did you decide what your business should look like?

Over the years, I have spent a considerable amount of time pondering my business, observing the business world, and thinking about what qualities I value in a business. I came to the conclusion that I want to serve my customers, who are my priority, by providing them a package deal:

  • Quick, efficient, friendly and professional service, so that they can get on their way to completing their project and are not slowed down by Land Surveying needs;
  • Strong communication and relationships based on integrity;
  • Competitive pricing;
  • And 100% reliability.

I care about my customers and believe that is the only way to do business. I take pride in my work, and pay attention to the details. I will get every job done well and as timely as possible.

Q: When did you decide to become an Alberta Land Surveyor?

In high school, we were required to complete a job shadowing assignment. I was able to shadow a local survey field crew, where I was introduced to the industry. While math and problem solving had always been my strength, I loved the idea of using it in a practical way. I immediately made up my mind that I would become an Alberta Land Surveyor.

Q: What does your educational background look like?

I graduated high school from Lacombe Composite High School, moved on to Red Deer College, then transferred to the University of Calgary. I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Geomatics Engineering (Survey Engineering) with Distinction in 2005. In 2011, I earned my Alberta Land Surveyor (ALS) Designation while working for a local land surveying company.

Q: How much experience do you have?

As of 2016, I have over 11 years of experience in the surveying industry in Central Alberta. My specializations include Construction Surveys, Real Property Reports, Boundary Marking, Subdivisions, Site Surveys, Elevation Surveys, Road Surveys, and Condominium Surveys.

Q: What areas do you service?

I service all of Central Alberta. My general area is from Airdrie to Leduc to Castor to Nordegg, but I’m not afraid to travel within Alberta. Contact me for survey requests!

Q: Outside of your company, what are your interests?

I enjoy camping, traveling, reading, my three black cats (which, I believe, bring luck), and sports. I play goalie in hockey and I’m part of a slo-pitch team. I enjoy exploring the outdoors with my fiancée and planning our wedding.

Q: How do you see your future?

I hope to continue to provide excellent service to my customers and leave them happy and satisfied. Successfully meeting their needs and timelines is my goal. I hope that this small business will serve many Central Albertans now and in the future. I also hope to start a family soon and teach my children the values of integrity, service, reliability, and hard work. I hope to continue to pursue my interests and live a happy life running this small business together with my future wife/family.
